Master and Child Items

Master and Child Items represent Physical Items that are available in multiple variations. For example, a particular style of shirt that is available in multiple colors and sizes might have a Master Item for the shirt style and a Child Item for each available combination of size and color.

Best practice is to Approve each Master Item before assigning any Child Items to it. Approved Child Items that belong to an Unapproved Master Item might result in undesired behavior.

Creating Master Items

To create a Master Item, create an Item normally with an Item Type of Item Master. See Creating New Items.

Creating Child Items

You can either create a Child Item from the Master Item record or assign an existing Item to be a Child Item. Note that a Child Item must be a Physical Item.

To create a Child Item from a Master Item record:

  1. In the Inventory accordion menu, select Inventory Manager.
  2. Browse or search for the Master Item as described in Searching for Items.
  3. Select the Master Item by clicking its ID. The Item details dialog opens.
  4. Scroll to the Child Variations section.
  5. Enter the Item Code for the new Item in the Item Code field. Note that you must enter an Item Code, even if your system is configured to automatically generate default Item Codes for new Items.
  6. Check the Copy Master box to copy the values from all fields and details (except Item Code and Item Type) of the Master Item to the Child Item. By default, it isn't checked.
  7. Click Create. The Child Item appears in the list. Its Title will match that of the Master Item.
  8. Use the red up and down arrow icons to rearrange the order of the Child Items in the list.

To assign an existing Item to be a Child Item of a Master Item:

  1. In the Inventory accordion menu, select the Inventory Manager.
  2. Browse or search for the Master Item as described in Searching for Items.
  3. Select the Master Item by clicking its ID. The Item details dialog opens.
  4. Scroll to the Child Variations section.
  5. Enter the Item Code for the existing Item in the Item Code field. Note that Child Items must be Physical Items. Selecting a different type of Item returns an error message.
  6. Check the Copy Master box to copy the values from all fields and details (except Item Code and Item Type) of the Master Item to the Child Item. Be careful, as this overwrites any current values of the Child Item. By default, it isn't checked.
  7. Click Create. The Child Item appears in the list. If you checked the Copy Master box, then its Title matches the Master Item Title. If you did not check that box, then it keeps its existing Title.
  8. Use the red up and down arrow icons to rearrange the order of the Child Items in the list.

Removing Child Items from a Master Item

To remove a Child Item from a Master Item:

  1. In the Inventory accordion menu, select the Inventory Manager.
  2. Browse or search for the Master Item as described in Searching for Items.
  3. Select the Master Item by clicking its ID. The Item details dialog opens.
  4. Scroll to the Child Variations section.
  5. Click the delete (trash can) icon next to the Child Item. It's removed from the list.

Note that this doesn't actually delete the Child Item; it removes the Master/ Child relationship.
