Shipping methods

Customer shipping methods can be selected during the sales order workflow on a website, retail store, or through Customer Service Center. When you add a shipping method, the default general information appears in a shipping method list. You can edit the following general information for a shipping method and the the pricing methods for the shipping method. See General Information and Method Pricing. The available shipping methods are based on the settings in the Shipping section of the External Processors - Shipping.

To select a shipping method, follow these steps:

  1. In Order Management Administration Settings > Providers.
  2. From the Providers Manager page, click the link for the company, catalog, or site level. The Object Configuration page appears.
  3. Select a custom profile from the drop-down list, if applicable.
  4. Select a shipping method from the Shipping Methods drop-down list and then click Add. The setting appears on the Object Configuration page. The shipping method is noted as active. From here you can edit the shipping method fields or delete the shipping method.
  5. Enter a configuration description in the Configuration Description field, if applicable.

    The shipping method appears in the shipping method list.

The following table describes the fields and buttons when selecting a shipping method.

Fields and buttons

Description

Profile drop-down

Custom profiles where you can assign a profile to the object (company, catalog, or site) for shipping provider. See Configuring Providers.

Shipping Method drop-down

Shipping methods such as DHL Ground, FedEx 1 Day Freight, USPS Express Mail. You can add a shipping method to the list multiple times, with each entry applying to certain destination regions.

Add button

Click to accept this shipping method. The shipping method appears in the list of shipping methods.

Configuration Description

Enter a description of the shipping method. (Optional)

Shipping Method listing

Selected methods. For each method, the following can be shown.

  • Shipping Method
  • Regions (Default is –All-)
  • Include/Exclude (Default is blank)
  • Active (Default is ‘X’ for Active)
  • Default (Default is Blank)
  • Edit icon (???)
  • Trash can icon (???)

Method Pricing

Each shipping method might be configured to apply a pricing method. See Method Pricing.

Add Individual Setting drop-down

General shipping settings apply to all shipping methods. All of these settings are optional.

Update button

Saves the setting changes.

Cancel button

Closes the page without saving the changes.

Clear Configuration button

Clears all settings.

General Information

When you add a shipping method, the default general information appears in a shipping method list. You can edit the following general information for a shipping method.

To edit the general information, follow these steps:

  1. Click the edit icon (???) to edit the general information for a shipping method.
  2. Enter information into the fields or by selecting options in the lists. All fields are optional. See the table for a description of all the fields, subfields, checkboxes, and lists.

    You can click the Trash can icon (???) to delete the shipping method.

The following table describes the general information fields and the buttons that appear when editing a shipping method’s general information.

Fields and buttons Description

Name

A customizable display name. The official name of the shipping method appears alongside it in the UI. (Optional)

Terms

A block of text that appears in the list of shipping methods when viewing the shipping provider. It's informational only. (Optional)

Regions drop-down

When you click the Edit icon (???) a list to restrict the shipping destinations for which this method is available. If no selection is made here, then the shipping method is available for shipping to any destination. If a method has been added to the list multiple times, then you can use this setting to configure its behavior differently for different regions. To use this setting, select a country from the drop-down list, then (optionally) a specific region from the second drop-down list.

Exclude and Include buttons

Exclude prevents this method from being used to ship to addresses in the selected country or region. Include makes the method available for shipping to the selected country or region. You can exclude or include multiple countries and/ or regions by selecting them one at a time. (Optional)

Active checkbox

Shipping method is available for use. If it isn't checked, then the shipping method won't be used. It's checked by default. (Optional)

Default radio box

Shipping method is set as the default shipping method when an order is first entered. The first shipping method that you enter will automatically be set as the default. It can't be unset except by setting a different method as the default. (Optional)

Save icon (???) or Cancel icon (???)

Saves or cancels the changes.

Trash can icon (???)

Deletes the shipping method from the list of methods.

Method Pricing

Each shipping method might be configured to apply a pricing method. Each pricing method can be set to require handling and insurance for the selected shipping method.

To edit and configure pricing for a selected method, follow these steps:

  1. Click the name of the method in the list. The pricing form below the list will be redrawn to apply to the selected method.

    For example, click the UPS Ground link. The available pricing fields for UPS Ground appear.

    The fields available on the form vary based on the selected pricing type. Pricing can be set based on the actual charges received from the shipping processor, a fixed amount, or a user-defined rate table. It can also be adjusted based on amounts defined for individual items included in an order.

  2. Configure pricing for the selected method by selecting a shipping charge type from the for method_name drop-down at the top of the form and enter information in the form as appropriate.
Note: In addition to the settings specific to each charge type, you can configure the use of item shipping bases for each shipping method and optional general shipping settings. See Item Shipping Bases and General Shipping Settings for details on these fields.

Actual Pricing

Order Management will retrieve actual shipping charges from the processor. This is available for USPS, UPS, and FedEx.

Example: If the actual shipping is $5 and a markup % of 10 is entered, then the resulting total shipping is $5 + ($5 X.10)) = $5.50. A 0 markup % in the same scenario would result in a total shipping of $5.

The following table describes the field settings that are available with the Actual Pricing method:

Handling Fee drop-down

Specify a handling charge as fixed or percentage. Enter the fixed or percentage amount in the text field:

  • None: No handling fee is charged.
  • Fixed: This value is the currency amount of the handling charge added to the order.
  • Percent: This value is used to calculate the handling charge as a percentage of the pre-shipping order total. The handling charge is optional and can be left empty.

Insurance over $

Currency amount that when exceeded would require an insurance charge.

Required checkbox

Require that insurance be purchased for orders that apply to this row. If you don't check the box, then insurance is optional and can be selected or declined at the time an order is placed. The Insurance charge is optional and can be left empty.

Insurance drop-down

Specify the amount of the insurance charge as fixed or percentage. Enter the fixed or percentage amount in the text field:

  • Fixed: This value is the currency amount of the insurance charge.
  • Percent: This value is used to calculate the insurance charge as a percentage of the pre-shipping order total.

Fixed + Pricing Method

The shipping charge is based on a fixed amount, with potential adjustments based on item quantity.

The following table describes the field settings that are available:

Base Fee

The fixed amount charged for this shipping method.

Handling Fee drop-down

A drop-down list to specify a handling charge as fixed or percentage. Enter the fixed or percentage amount in the text field:

  • None: No handling fee is charged.
  • Fixed: This value is the currency amount of the handling charge added to the order.
  • Percent: This value is used to calculate the handling charge as a percentage of the pre-shipping order total. The handling charge is optional and can be left empty.

Additional Per _____ Item(s) field

A quantity of order items that increases or decreases the shipping charge based on the drop-down and text field below it. (For example, entering ‘3’ here causes the shipping charge to be adjusted for every three items included in an order.) Leaving this field blank causes the increase or decrease to apply to every item in an order (the same behavior as entering ‘1’).

Additional Per Item drop-down

A drop-down list to specify a shipping adjustment based on additional items. Enter the amount or percentage in the text field:

  • None: No adjustment based on item quantity is made.
  • Fixed: The shipping charge is increased by the currency amount specified in the text field.
  • Markdown %: The shipping charge is discounted by the percentage specified in the text field.
  • Markdown $: The shipping charge is discounted by the currency amount specified in the text field.
  • Markup %: The shipping charge is increased by the percentage specified in the text field.
  • Markup $: The shipping charge is increased by the currency amount specified in the text field.

Fixed + Weight Pricing Method

The Fixed + Weight shipping charge is based on a fixed amount, with potential adjustments based on the weight of the shipment.

Example: If a based fixed shipping amount of $5 is entered, an additional item fee per pound with a markup 10% for every 2 pounds, and the customer orders any number of the item which cumulatively weigh 2 additional pounds, then the fixed shipping fee is $5 + ($5 X.10) = $5.50.

The following table describes the field settings that are available for the Fixed + Weight pricing method:

Field settings Description

Round weight to the next whole pound checkbox

If this box is checked, the weight of a shipment is rounded up to the next whole pound. If it isn't checked, then the weight of a shipment is rounded down to the previous whole pound.

Base Fee

The fixed amount charged for this shipping method.

Handling Fee drop-down

Specify a handling charge as fixed or percentage. Enter the fixed or percentage amount in the text field:

  • None: No handling fee is charged.
  • Fixed: This value is the currency amount of the handling charge added to the order.
  • Percent: This value is used to calculate the handling charge as a percentage of the pre-shipping order total. The handling charge is optional and can be left empty.

Additional Per _____ lb(s)

A weight in pounds (considering the entire shipment) that will increase or decrease the shipping charge based on the drop-down and text field below it. (For example, entering ‘3’ here causes the shipping charge to be adjusted for every three pounds of weight in an order.)

Additional Per lb(s) drop-down

Specify a shipping adjustment based on additional weight. Enter the amount or percentage in the text field:

  • None: No adjustment based on weight is made.
  • Fixed: The shipping charge is increased by the currency amount specified in the text field.
  • Markdown %: The shipping charge is discounted by the percentage specified in the text field.
  • Markdown $: The shipping charge is discounted by the currency amount specified in the text field.
  • Markup %: The shipping charge is increased by the percentage specified in the text field.
  • Markup $: The shipping charge is increased by the currency amount specified in the text field.

Price Points Pricing Method

The shipping charge is calculated using a rate table based on the total pre-shipping price of the order. The price point shipping can also be set in the Fixed Shipping field in the item record.

Price points represent cumulative amounts for the sales order for which the price for shipping is set. Price points can be set as a fixed amount or a percentage of the order total. If a base fee is set, the Price Point table values are added to the Base Fee.

Example: If a based fixed shipping amount of $5 is entered, a markup % of 10, and a price of $10 at a $99 price point and the sales order is for $98, then the shipping fee is $5 + ($5X.10) + $10 = $15.50

To generate the table, do the following:

  1. Enter information into the following fields, which are described in the following table.
    • Base Fee
    • Up to Order
    • Fixed or Percent from the Shipping drop-down and enter a value in the adjacent field
    • Fixed or Percent from the Handling drop-down and enter a value in the adjacent field
    • Fixed or Percent from the Insurance drop- down and enter a value in the adjacent field
    • Required checkbox
  2. Click Add Point to add the row to the table.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 for each desired row of the table. The last row of the table should use an Up to Order Total of 999,999. Otherwise, any order with a price higher than that set for the highest row won't have any shipping, handling, or insurance charge applied (beyond the Base Fee, if set).

The following table describes the field settings that are available for the Price Points pricing method:

Base Fee

The base shipping charge for all orders, with the appropriate amount from the table added to it. This is optional and can be left empty.

Up to Order Total

Enter a currency amount in this field. The current row applies to order unit quantities that are greater than the value entered for the previous row (or zero if this is the first row) but not greater than the quantity entered here.

Shipping drop-down

Specify a shipping charge as fixed or percentage. Enter the fixed or percentage amount in the text field:

  • Fixed: This value is the currency amount of the shipping charge.
  • Percent: This value is used to calculate the shipping charge as a percentage of the pre-shipping order total.

Handling Fee drop-down

Specify a handling charge. Enter the fixed or percentage in the text field:

  • Fixed: This value is the currency amount of the handling charge added to the order.
  • Percent: This value is used to calculate the handling charge as a percentage of the pre-shipping order total. The handling charge is optional and can be left empty.

Insurance drop-down

Specify the amount of the insurance charge as fixed or percentage. Enter the fixed or percentage amount in the text field:

  • Fixed: This value is the currency amount of the insurance charge.
  • Percent: This value is used to calculate the insurance charge as a percentage of the pre-shipping order total.

Required checkbox

Check the Required box to require that insurance be purchased for orders that apply to this row. If you don't check the box, then insurance is optional and can be selected or declined at the time an order is placed. The Insurance charge is optional and can be left empty.

Add Point button

Adds the row to the table.

Quality Points Pricing Method

The shipping charge is calculated using a rate table based on the unit quantity of the order.

Example: If a based fixed shipping amount of $5 is entered, a markup % of 10, and a price of $10 at a quantity of up to 2 items and the sales order is for 2 items, then the shipping fee is $5 + ($5X.10) + $10 = $15.50

To generate the table, do the following:

  1. Enter information into the following fields, which are described in the following table.
    • Base Fee
    • Up to Order Qty
    • Fixed or Percent from the Shipping drop-down and enter a value in the adjacent field
    • Fixed or Percent from the Handling drop-down and enter a value in the adjacent field
    • Fixed or Percent from the Insurance drop-down and enter a value in the adjacent field
    • Required checkbox
  2. Click Add Point to add the row to the table.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 for each desired row of the table. The last row of the table should use an Up to Order Qty of 999,999. Otherwise, any order with a unit quantity higher than that set for the highest row won't have any shipping, handling, or insurance charge applied (beyond the base fee, if set).

The following table describes the field settings that are available for the Quality Points pricing method:

Weight Points Pricing Method

The shipping charge is calculated using a rate table based on the total weight of the order in pounds.

Example: If a based fixed shipping amount of $5 is entered, a markup % of 10, and a price of $10 at a quantity of up to 2 pounds and the sales order is for 1 pound, then the shipping fee is $5 + ($5X.10) + $10 = $15.50

To generate the table, do the following:

  1. Enter information into the following fields, which are described in the following table.
    • Round weight to the next whole pound
    • Base Fee
    • Up to Order lbs
    • Fixed or Percent from the Shipping drop-down and enter a value in the adjacent field.
    • Fixed or Percent from the Handling drop-down and enter a value in the adjacent field.
    • Fixed or Percent from the Insurance drop-down and enter a value in the adjacent field
    • Required checkbox
  2. Click Add Point to add the row to the table.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 for each desired row of the table. The last row of the table should use an Up to Order lbs of 999,999. Otherwise, any order with a weight higher than that set for the highest row won't have any shipping, handling, or insurance charge applied (beyond the Base Fee, if set).

Item Shipping Bases

In addition to the settings specific to each charge type, you can configure the use of item shipping bases for each shipping method. A Shipping Basis is an optional amount configured for an item that can be added to the shipping charge for orders including that item. For each shipping method that you configure in the Shipping provider, you specify whether to include shipping bases via the Include Shipping Basis checkbox. In addition, you can select an adjustment from the adjacent drop-down.

The following table describes the Item Shipping Bases fields.

Field settings Description

Include Shipping Basis with XXXXX adjustment checkbox with drop-down and field

Enable inclusion of an optional amount for an item that can be added to the shipping charge for orders including that item. If this isn't checked an adjustment isn't made.

Select the adjustment type. Note that any option other than No opens a text field for specifying the adjustment.

  • No: The shipping bases for any items in the order are simply added to the shipping charge. This is the default selection.
  • Markdown %: The shipping base for any items in the order is discounted by the percentage specified in the text field, then added to the shipping charge.
  • Markdown $: The shipping base for any items in the order is discounted by the currency amount specified in the text field, then added to the shipping charge.
  • Markup %: The shipping base for any items in the order is increased by the percentage specified in the text field, then added to the shipping charge.
  • Markup $: The shipping bases for any items in the order is increased by the currency amount specified in the text field, then added to the shipping charge.

General Shipping Settings

General shipping settings apply to all shipping methods. All of these settings are optional. To add a setting, select it from the drop-down and click Add Individual Setting.

The following table describes the fields and buttons available when setting general shipping settings.

A drop-down list that contains available general shipping settings including:

  • Freeform Text & Description: This setting appears in the Customer Service Center when entering the payment information for an order.
  • Package Height

  • Exclude from Shipping Calculation
  • Packing Box Height (Max)
  • Packing Box Weight (Max)
  • Packing Box Width (Max)
  • Packing Box Length (Max)
  • Packing Box Algorithm: select None or Simple from the list.
  • Rate Quote Source: select Retail, Account, or Negotiated from the list. For certain shipping processors, this designates the type of shipping rate to be quoted

Trash can icon (???)

Deletes the setting in the list.

Help icon (???)

Provides a definition of the setting.
