Inventory - Defaults

The Defaults setting lets you generate and manage Item Codes. It's important that you set them up as appropriate for your business. When you select Defaults from the Inventory tab in System Preferences, the New Item Default page appears.

To enable the Item Defaults, follow these steps:

  1. In the Settings accordion menu, select Preferences.
  2. Click the Inventory tab.
  3. Click Defaults. The New Item Defaults page appears.
  4. Select the desired Item Code and Code Generation settings. The table describes the fields and buttons on this page.
  5. Click Update to save the settings.

The following table describes the parameter fields and buttons on the New Item Defaults page.

Fields and Buttons Description
Item Code: Maintain Unique Item Codes checkbox If this box is checked, Order Management doesn't let multiple items have duplicate item codes. If it isn't checked, items might have duplicate item codes. In this case, the database maintains a unique identifier for each item, but this value isn't directly visible in the user interface.
Code Generation drop-down A drop-down list that controls the way Order Management assigns item codes to newly created items:
  • Sequence: A code is automatically assigned to each new item. The actual code is generated by incrementing the code assigned to the previous new item.
  • Random: A randomly generated unique code is assigned to each new item.
  • None: Order Management won't automatically assign codes to new items.
Format Defines the format that item codes take. Use ‘9’ to represent a digit and ‘A’ to represent a letter. For example, “9999AA” means that item codes consists of four digits followed by two letters.
Item Taxable checkbox If checked, new items default to being taxable. If unchecked, new items default to not being taxable.
Track Inventory checkbox If checked, new items default to having their inventory tracked. If unchecked, new items default to not having their inventory tracked.
Item Backorderable checkbox If checked, new items default to being backorderable. If unchecked, new items default to not being backorderable.
Item Unique checkbox If checked, new items default to being unique (only one actual physical item exists for each item in the system). If unchecked, new items default to not being unique.
Item Drop Ship checkbox If checked, new items default to being drop-shipped. If unchecked, new items default to not being drop-shipped.
Item Autosource checkbox If checked, new items default to being autosourced. If unchecked, new items default to not being autosourced.
Maintain Automatic Item Variation Titles checkbox If this box is checked, then an automated process will run overnight to generate and assign a name to each child item that doesn't already have a name, based on its master item name and the value of its key attributes.
Update button Applies any changes made to the fields on this page.
